Ex-Deputy Vernon Ward Dies

Vernon Ward, 72, of Mill Valley, retired sheriff’s deputy, died yesterday in a local hospital after a brief illness.

Ward retired three years ago as a sergeant after 17 years in the sheriff’s department.

A native of San Francisco, he lived in Mill Valley for 66 years. He resided with his wife, Belmeda, at 329 Miller Avenue.

He was a member of Marin County Peace Officers Association.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Paul E. Taylor of Mill Valley; his mother, Mrs. Lydia Ward of San Jose; a sister, Mrs. Leo Fournier of San Luis Obispo, and one grandson.

Funeral will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Russell and Gooch Mortuary, Mill Valley. Entombment will be private. Rosary will be recited today at 8 p.m. in the mortuary.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds information: his wife was Belmeda M. Ward; he was the son of the late John T. Ward, and grandfather of Russell W. Taylor.
