Passed away at home on January 31, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. Don is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Elizabeth, and their five children, Michael Maritzen of Rio Nido, Mary Lynn Smith of San Clemente, Donna Stolz of Rohnert Park, Christopher Maritzen of Morro Bay, Carolyn Risley of Camp Meeker, and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Stanley, of Stockton.
Don was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. Don served in the Naval Air Force during the Korean War. He was proud to tell all that he spent that time patrolling the West Coast in a blimp. He lived in Marin County for 40 years, where he raised his family. After retiring from Pepsi Cola he moved to Sonoma County and spent his last two years in his former summer home in Camp Meeker. Don was an avid Forty-Niner fan and attended quite a few games. He was a member of SIRS men's organization in Fairfax and recently became a member of the Sebastopol chapter. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Northwood Men's Golf Club. He loved camping and boating, especially at his campsite at Lake Pillsbury in Lake County.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Sutter VNA and Hospice in Santa Rosa, or to the Restoration Fund of St. Phillip of the Apostle in Occidental.
A Funeral Mass will be held on February 16, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Phillip the Apostle Church in Occidental, followed by a Celebration of His Life at Anderson Hall in Camp Meeker. Arrangements by ADOBE CREEK FUNERAL HOME, 331 Lakeville Street, Petaluma, California.
