Eugene Seright Arntz
Died January 26, 2002 at age 81, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
Gene was born in North Dakota. He came to San Francisco at age 16. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic, as he refused for moral reasons to carry a weapon. With his three brothers, he started a general contracting business, in which he was active until his illness. His three sons now continue the business. He also developed and owned Red Hill Shopping Center in San Anselmo.
In addition to his successful business career, Gene was a philanthropist, poet, philosopher, and a wonderful friend to many. He established a charitable foundation, published a book of poetry, and was well read in many areas. He had a deep love of nature, and spent lots of time gardening, sailing, hiking and skiing.
Gene is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nelle Arntz, his four children, Allan, Katherine, Tom and Don, ten grandchildren, and his sister Jennie and brother John.
He was a wonderful husband, father, and brother, and will be greatly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, February 10th, 3:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church in San Rafael.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association North Bay Chapter (415) 472-4340 or Hospice of Marin (415) 927-2273.
