Garth X. Basford, longtime Sausalito resident, died yesterday in a local hospital after a long illness. He was 72.

A native of San Francisco, he had lived in Marin County for 32 years, residing at 207 Third Street Prior to his retirement, Basford was employed as an office worker for Nunes Brothers Shipbuilders in Sausalito.

He was a member of UPEC, a Sausalito Portugese organization, th e American Legion, Mill Valley Post No. 284 and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1149.

Basford is survived by his wife, Bertha, of Sausalito, and two brothers, Hugh Basford of Atwater, Merced County and Roland Burrit of Arizona. Requiem Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Mill Valley. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow in Russell and Gooch Funeral Chapel, Mill Valley. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, San Rafael.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that he was the uncle of Edith Ritchie of Sausalito.
