DR. M. L. GERSTLE
Private funeral for Dr. Mark Lewis Gerstle, a member of the family that gave Gerstle Park to the city of San Rafael, was held Friday in San Francisco.
Dr. Gerstle, 77, of San Francisco died Thursday at his home. He was a retired psychiatrist who practiced in New York and San Francisco and also was associated with the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco.
Dr. Gerstle was the author of professional articles and a member of the American Fellowship of Psychiatrists. He served as a Navy enlisted man in World War I and as a Navy captain in the Pacific in World War II.
He lived in Sleepy Hollow for a time during the 1940s and practiced in San Anselmo.
Dr. Gerstle was the grandson of California pioneers Lewis and Hannah Gerstle who established a summer home in Violet Terrace in San Rafael in 1881. The site of the home was donated to the city of San Rafael by their children as a memorial.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Gerstle of San Francisco; a son, Mark L. Gerstle III of San Francisco; a daughter, Cynthia Gerstle Jarnigan of Tiburon; six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
The family prefers that memorial contributions be to a favorite charity.
