Funeral Services Held For Marin Pioneer
Funeral services for James C. Shafter, 78, member of a pioneer Marin County family were held Monday in San Francisco. Interment was private. He died Friday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Julia Shafter Hamilton near Inverness. He is also survived by his brother, Payne Shafter.
Dr. Shafter was educated in Europe and had his degree as a doctor of medicine, but did not practice. He had made his home with Mrs. Hamilton for a number of years.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James McMilan Shafter who came to California in 1855. They bought 25,000 acres in the vicinity of Olema and Pt. Reyes and stocked it with 2000 head of the finest cattle.
James Shafter, before coming to California, had been a member of the Vermont House of Representatives and later Secretary of State.
