HERBERT H. SCHEIER
At his request no funeral service will be held for Herbert Henry Scheier of Belvedere, a retired attorney who had been a member of Gen. Douglas MacArthurís headquarters staff in Japan.
Scheier, 84, died Wednesday at a local hospital after an illness.
Scheier was a member of the bar in California, Illinois and Wisconsin and was admitted to practice before the Unites States Supreme Court.
He graduated from Harvard College in 1917 and Harvard Law School in 1921. He practiced law in Chicago from 1921 until 1947 when he joined General MacArthur in Japan as a civilian, serving as chief of the reorganized branch of the anti-trust and cartel division until the end of 1949.
After the outbreak of the Korean War he served with the Defense Production Administration as a director of the tax amortization division until 1953 when he returned to Tokyo.
Scheier received a certificate of achievement for outstanding service after his duty in Japan.
He moved to Belvedere in 1958 and was a candidate for the Belvedere City Council in 1960 and 1962.
Surviving are his wife, Irma Bley Scheier; and a sister, Bertha Levin of West Dundee, Ill.
The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Shrinerís Hospital in San Francisco, or a favorite charity.
