WILLIAM H. MacKAY

A memorial service for William H. MacKay of Rossmoor, former Belvedere city attorney and a Marin resident for about 30 years, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Trinity Community Church in San Rafael.

MacKay, 83, died Wednesday in a Contra Costa County Hospital after a brief illness.

MacKay was a native of Denver and attended the University of Colorado. He then attended the Naval Academy and served as an ensign in the Navy in World War I.

After the was, MacKay attended Columbia University Law School where he served as editor of the law review. After graduation, he practiced law in Arizona for about 10 years before moving to San Francisco in 1936.

He lived in San Francisco until 1939 when he moved to Marin. He lived most of his time in Marin in Kent Woodlands.

He was with the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison and Sutro in San Francisco for a few years and then opened his own practice.

He served as city attorney for Belvedere from 1958 to 1969 when he was replaced by his son, Robert F. MacKay.

MacKay also served as a special U.S. Attorney. He was president of the Columbia Alumni Association and a member of the American, California and Marin bar associations. He also served as an elder of the Presbyterian Church in San Anselmo and was a member of the American Legion, the Kiwanis Club and the Commonwealth Club.

He also belonged to the Marin County Republican Central Committee. In 1969 he moved to Rossmoor in Contra Costa County where he was a member of the Rossmoor Choral Society.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen MacKay of Rossmoor; three sons, Robert F. MacKay of Ignacio, William S. MacKay of Ross and Theodore C. MacKay of San Francisco; two sisters, Ann and Roberta MacKay, both of Denver; and four grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be held Monday at Golden Gate National Cemetery.
