Last Civil War Vet in County Dies
Edwin Porter Ammerman, 89, last surviving veteran of the Civil War in Marin County, died yesterday noon at his home in Sausalito following a long illness.
A native of Ohio, Ammerman joined the Union forces when but a boy and fought with the Twenty-fifth Missouri Volunteers, under Gen. U. S. Grant at the battle of Shiloh, and saw much other service. He was ill for a long period after the war. His wife, whom he married shortly after the war, was a Southern girl.
Mr. Ammerman resided for many years in the San Joaquin Valley and came to Sausalito 15 years ago.
Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Margaret Ammerman; two sons – Earl W. Ammerman, chief clerk in the office of Sheriff Walter B. Sellmer and Sausalito city councilman and Clay E. Ammerman of Los Angeles – and four grandchildren – Miss Naomi Ammerman, Lelan Ammerman, Mrs. Frank Grossman and Mrs. Donald le Gray Birch.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, January 20, at 2:30 o’clock at the parlors of Keaton & Dusel. Rev. H. St. George Buttrum, rector of Christ Episcopal Church of Sausalito, will officate.
