LeRoy C. Pitts, 77, of San Rafael, former press room superintendent for the old San Francisco News, died early yesterday in a local hospital after suffering a heart Attack June 12.
A native of New Mexico, he came to California 70 years ago. He worked on the Los Angeles Examiner shortly after the turn of the century, and came to San Francisco in 1905.
On the day of the 1906 earthquake and fire he and a crew dragged the press from the News building, dug a hole, and buried it to keep it from the flames.
A resident of San Francisco for many years, he retired as superintendent of press operations for the News in 1959 and moved to 50 Sonoma Street, San Rafael.
He was a member of the Web Pressmanís Union for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Irene, his son, Don, and one grandchild.
Private funeral services were held today at Chapel of the Hills, San Anselmo. Inurnment was at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that he was the grandfather of David L. Pitts.
