Pioneer’s Son Taken By Death
In the death of Baptiste Truvedor, 55, son of “Little Baptiste,” hero of the Donner party, an interesting but tragic bit of history is recalled.
“Little Baptiste” was the son of a French Canadian trapper and was but 19 years of age at the time he joined the Donner party. He was a skilled trapper, and led the way for the courageous little band, hunting them meat and showing them the way. When they were caught in the mountains and snowed in, many of the men deserted to save themselves, but Baptiste did all he could to find food and shelter for them.
When he reached the Pacific Coast, Baptiste settled in Marshall and married there. The man who died Saturday was the son of the pioneer.
