Funeral will be held Wednesday for Lt. Col. Margaret M. Thornton (ret.) of Sausalito who died Friday in San Francisco after a long illness. She was 70.
She moved to Sausalito from San Francisco in 1958, following her retirement from the Army after a 16-year career.
A native of Los Angeles, she received a BA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a masterís degree in 1928 from the University of California, Berkeley.
She worked on the staff of the Life Sciences Group at UCLA before joining the Womenís Army Corps in 1942.
During her army career she served as assistant commandant of the Womenís Army Corps officer candidate school at Fort Lee, Va., and as advisor to the commanding generalís office of the Army Caribbean headquarters in Panama.
Prior to her retirement, she was the commanding-generalís advisor on Womenís Army Corps affairs at the 6th Army headquarters, the Presidio, in San Francisco.
She is survived by a step-brother, Dean Breeze, of Reno, Nev.
Services will be at 10 a.m. at the Protestant Chapel of the Presidio. Interment will be at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno.
