Marshall blaze killed ex-Disney illustrator, 77
A 77-year-old Marshall man’s artistic pursuits may have contributed to the fire that killed him.
Till Schmid was identified as the victim of the house fire Sunday night on Shoreline Highway. Neighbors said Schmid, a longtime Marshall resident, was a retired movie illustrator for Walt Disney.
County Fire Marshall Keith Parker said Schmid’s home was stuffed with highly combustible art supplies and artwork, making the house a powder keg. To make matters worse, firefighters found a powerful portable heater – designed only for outside use – in the living area.
“There were tons of drawings and magazines,” Parker said. “There was lost and lots of combustible material.”
Firefighters said Schmid was the only person home when the fire broke out shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday. Parker said the remote house, which sits on stilts over Tomales Bay, was gutted by the time firefighters arrived.
The house had no smoke detectors. Firefighters found Schmid’s body inches inside the front door.
Schmid was a nonsmoker who lived alone, Parker said.
