My grandmother was raised in an orphanage in the 1900's. My family and I are trying to find any information we can as to which orphanage she may have been residing in up until her 17th birthday.
My grandmother was orphaned in San Francisco (approximately in the year 1899) and was brought to a Catholic orphanage. She remembered there being a fight or some sort of big commotion and she ended up with a policeman and a boy at the orphanage. She also remembers speaking Spanish and she is listed as being born in Porto Rico on my fatherís birth certificate. Her name was Louisa Maria but we do not have accurate details (of her name, birthdate, etc.) because her documents were lost in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
From my research, I think her family may have been one of the many that migrated from PR to California with the intentions that they proceed to Hawaii as laborers.
Does anyone have information with the names of the children at St. Joseph's orphanage at that time? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
