I can remember in the 30's my Mom tacking me to the Crystal Palace Market on 8th and Market Street to get our Thanksgiving turkey. It was a long trip as we lived on the 2100 block of Greenwich Street across from Yerba Buena Grammar School. We would go all the way to the back of the store where they had cages with live turkeys. She would point to one and the man would take it into the back room and cut off its head. He would ask my mother if she wanted him to remove the feathers and she would say no because it cost more money. We would take it home and the family would pluck feathers for hours.
There wasn't a lot of money around at that time but as children we didn't know because everyone was in the same boat. I still call them "The good old days"
