My mother attended school in San Francisco from jr high at Horace Mann to Mission High. She was there from 1943 to 1947 when she graduated and went back to Nevada.
She and two of her sisters, Virginia "Teena" Voigts and Bess Voigts lived in their grandmothers house on Hampshire street. Grandmother Mathilda Voigts died in Dec 1943 so they were three teenagers living on their own. Mom worked while in high school at the phone company and dipping chocolates. To the day she died she could tell us what was in most chocolates by the "twist" on the top. Mom said it was exciting to live there in those years. She gathered up many great pieces of jewelry from pawn shops and five and dimes. I and my sisters still have them.
She did tell us once or twice about sneaking into the night clubs and dancing with the military guys (but we got the old "do as I say, not as I did" lecture along w/the stories).
My Cousin Lynda attended mom's 50th school reunion with her in 1997. Lynda says the best high school reunion she has ever attended was her aunts 50th. Apparently there were a lot of guys in mom's class who went on to have careers playing major league baseball.
