George N. Hale
Villa Marin resident
George N. Hale died Friday, Feb. 8, 1991, at his Villa Marin home in San Rafael. He was 93.
Mr. Hale was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. After graduating from the University of Colorado, he moved to Southern California. He was a principal and superintendent in a number of school districts in Orange County.
After World War II, Mr. Hale joined the state Department of Education as an administrator for the Southern California region.
After he retired in 1962, Mr. Hale became active in cultural and civic affairs in Orange County. He served as president of Goodwill Industries and was on the boards of the Bowers Museum, Western Medical Center and t he Friends of the University of California, Irvine. He was a member of t he Santa Ana Library Commission.
Mr. Hale was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He was a 32nd Scottish-rite mason and a ruling elder of the Presbyterian church.
Mr. Hale and his wife, Clara Buckland Hale, had been married 67 years when she died in 1989.
Mr. and Mrs. Hale became one of the first residents at the Villa Marin when they moved to the retirement community in 1985. At Villa Marin, Mr. Hale was active in the Villa Marin Homeowners Association and served on its library and health committees.
Mr. Hale is survived by his son, George N. Hale Jr. of San Francisco; his daughter, Marian Hale Phillips of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Private services were held at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery. Mount Tamalpais Mortuary handled the arrangements.
