Betty Lowell Christensen

Age 79, died peacefully while surrounded by her family on Tuesday, January 29th, 2002. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Betty was the devoted daughter of Goldie Alma Lowell. She grew up in New York, graduating from Bernard College in 1943. Well-known in New York as a professional singer, she met Marvin Christensen, a Marin County native, while performing at a New York City USO club during World War II. The couple became engaged shortly thereafter, and when Marvin was sent into active duty, they communicated through coded messages and arranged to meet and marry in California after Marvin was discharged from service. Betty remained in Marin for the rest of her life, dedicating her time to her children, to music, and to a wide variety of local community organizations. She volunteered for many years as a music teacher at her children's schools and later sang with the Marin Community Chorus. She was a Camp Fire Girls leader, an avid tennis, Bingo, and Bridge player, a birdwatcher, concertgoer, horse show mom, and proud member of the American Association of University Women and the ACLU.

She is survived and will be dearly missed by her children: Cheryl Keller Brooks, Andrea Christensen, Scott Christensen, and Janet Christensen; her sons in-law Wendell Brooks, John Ranis, and Michael Clemons; and her six grandchildren: Samantha Keller, Stacey Lombardi, Janelle Lombardi, Michael Ranis, McKinley Clemons and Coleman Clemons. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the Marin Art and Garden Center Livermore Room. Contributions may be made to local Marin charities, including the Marin Community Foundation.
