SPOTSWOOD, Robert Maitland -- Aged 87, passed away at the Redwoods Retirement Center in Mill Valley on June 27, 2001. Beloved husband of 53 years to the late Angelina Centanaro Spotswood. Survived by his devoted son Richard D. Spotswood; his dear daughter-in-law Joanne Peterson Spotswood; and his adoring grandchildren, Alexander Spotswood and Elizabeth Anne Spotswood, who knew him as 'Da'. He was predeceased by his sister Virginia O'Brien Spotswood. Born in Burlingame, raised in Palo Alto, he retired as a Lieutenant in the San Francisco Police Department. Lt. Spotswood served in most of San Francisco's district police stations, as well as the old Accident Prevention Bureau. He was a member of the Police Community Relations Unit during the volatile 1970's. Lt. Spotswood attended San Jose State College, City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State. He was a fifty-year resident of the Marina District. In retirement he moved to Mill Valley to live near his son and grandchildren. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Men's Club, Swinging Sixties, Unknown Athletic Club, Native Sons of the Golden West, Knights of Columbus, Cow Hollow Boys, YMI, USF Dons Club, and Retired Police Officers' Association. Lt. Spotswood was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and served in the Pacific in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Friends and family are invited to attend the vigil service Sunday, July 1, 2001, at 4PM at HALSTED N. GRAY - CAREW & NGLISH, 1123 Sutter St., San Francisco. Funeral Mass will be said Monday, July 2, 2001, at 915AM at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Green & Steiner Streets, San Francisco. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma CA. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ignatius Scholarship Fund, 2001 37th Ave., SF CA 94116 or Marin Catholic High School Scholarship Fund, 675 Sir Francis Drake Bl., Kentfield CA 94904.
