John Ross Hardy, 58, a retired advertising executive, was found dead at his Corte Madera home early yesterday.
His wife, Thelma Hardy, told Corte Madera police chief Frank Nelson that she noticed her husband was not in bed at 4 a.m. and no lights were on in the house. She said she found him in the car in the garage.
Deputy Coroner Tom A. Weisner said Hardy was slumped in the back sear of the automobile with the engine running and a hose from the exhaust pipe to a car window. He said Hardy died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Mrs. Hardy told police that her husband had been despondent recently. He left no notes.
Hardy had worked as copy writer for the San Francisco advertising firm of J. Walter Tompson for the past 25 years. He retired last January. A resident of Marin for 12 years, he lived at 455 Chapman Drive, Corte Madera.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Constance Ann Cox of Alhambra; and two sisters, Dorothy Parsons and Elise Hesse of San Jose.
Private family services were held today at Keatonís in San Rafael.
