J. A. Smithies

James Arthur Smithies, Jr., 65, of Sausalito, died yesterday in a local hospital after a five-week illness.

He was a native of New York; he resided at 11 Tomales Street.

Smithies was a retired assistant passenger manager for Holland-America Lines in San Francisco.

He was a member of the Sausalito Yacht club and a past president of the Foreign Travel Club of San Francisco.

He is survived by his wife, Eva.

Private funeral was held today at Keatonís Mortuary, San Rafael. Memorial services will be announced later. His family asked that memorial contributions go to Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael.

A Death Notice in the same paper mentions a cousin, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunter, and an aunt, Miss Elsie Smithies.
