SPARKS – At home in San Rafael, July 17, 1994 after a short illness, Carl Kenneth Sparks, Founder, former President Aero Special Delivery Service, Inc. A longtime resident of Mill Valley and the Bay Area; born January 31, 1925 in New Market, Iowa and raised on the family farm; relocated to Richmond to work at the Kaiser Shipyards in 1942. During his military service in World War II, Mr. Sparks was in the Armed Guard Branch of the U.S. Navy serving on merchant ships in the European, African and S o. Pacific theaters; survived the torpedoing of the Oliver Wendell Holmes during the Murmansk Run, a lifeline convoy to Russia.
Mr. Sparks returned to the Bay area upon his discharge from the Navy and started his own delivery service. Known widely as being the “father” and innovator of the bicycle messenger service industry as it is known today, a concept that has spread across the country.
Preceded in death by his brother, Darwin Sparks of Villisca, Iowa. Survived by his sons, Todd of San Rafael, Gregg of Walnut Creek and Kirk of Geyserville; sisters, Doreen Drennen of New Market, Iowa, Evaleen Sprague of Villisca, Iowa and Linda Williams of Clarinda, Iowa; brothers, Lelan of San Francisco, Marlin Frank of San Mateo, Oliver of Redwood City, Jerry of Paducah, Kentucky; grandchildren, Brooke, Dawn Ann, Heather, Serina, Tasha and Tyler.
Friends are invited to attend graveside services Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery, 2500 5th Ave., San Rafael. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Marin, 150 Ave. (sic), Corte Madera, CA 94925.
