GRIFFIN, Alfred Cecil -- Died in San Rafael California on June 5, 2001. Col Griffin is survived by his sister, Ruth G. Smith of San Anselmo, and nephews Kirk R. Smith of Berkeley, Thad J. Smith of San Francisco, and Mark CT. Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born in Portland, Oregon on August 12, 1918, he was educated at Grant High School and at Princeton University (class of '41) in History and International Relations and conducted research in Japan for his 1940 senior thesis on Japanese reactions to US policy in the Pacific. He also taught for a short time in Peking, China, while in Asia. He started active military service in January 1942 as a Marine Corps communications officer in the WWII Pacific Theatre, where he was wounded, returned to active duty, and later decorated with the Bronze Star through his bravery at Okinawa. He was in the 6th Marine Division when discharged from active duty in February 1946. After the war, he worked for El Dorado Trading Co., a coconut oil firm in the Philippines, until the early 1950s when he joined Caltex Petroleum Co. where he remained until his retirement in 1973. During his career, he held positions in Pakistan, India, Egypt, Indonesia, and Vietnam, often serving as country manager. He remained in the Marine Corps Reserve, rising to Colonel in 1963 and retiring in 1968. After retirement from Caltex, he lived in Tiburon, California until moving to San Rafael in 1999. Memorial gifts can be sent in his name to the Foreign Student Scholarship Fund of the College of Marin, Kentfield CA 94904. A memorial service will be held for family and friends in August.
