Death Takes Robt. Magnes, Respected Pioneer in 82nd Year
Another Marin county pioneer business man, passed to the Great Beyond last Monday.
Robert Magnes, for many years a leading shoe merchant in San Rafael, died at his home at Fourth and F streets early on the morning of Armistice Day, at the age of 82 years, following several weeks illness.
Mr. Magnes was born in Poland. He came to the U.S. as a young man and located in San Rafael in 1879. His shoe store was located in the old Opera House block, between C and D.
After retiring from active business here he engaged in the wholesale shoe business in San Francisco, returning to San Rafael after the 1906 fire.
In 1923 he built a row of stores adjoining his home and conducted a small stationery and notions business in one of the rooms until a few weeks ago when ill health forced him to give up.
Mr. Magnes had extensive real estate holdings in both Marin and San Francisco.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bertha Magnes, and one son, Irving Magnes, prominent east bay attorney.
Funeral services were held Wednesday from the parlors of Halsted and Co., with interment in Hills of Eternity Cemetery.
