Haldis Lyckfors passed away to join her late husband Erik in heaven on February 9, 2002. She was 81.
Haldis was born in Henningsvaer, Norway, a tiny fishing village in the Lofoten islands. She rowed a boat to and from school, sometimes over stormy seas.
Haldis was an adventurer. She left Henningsvaer to become a surgery nurse in Norway and in San Francisco, where she met and married Erik.
She eventually settled in Tiburon with her family and finished her nursing career at Marin General Hospital in minor/outpatient surgery, where she was known for being comforting and calming to nervous patients.
Haldis was an avid hiker and cross country skier. She and Erik hiked up many mountains together and probably hiked every single trail on Mt. Tam. Haldis loved children and was very fond of animals and nature. She loved to celebrate holidays and other special occasions. Haldis traveled through Europe, South America, and the United States. On her last of many visits to Norway, she took a winter time cruise so she could re-experience the storms.
Haldis was a member of Sons of Norway and the Norwegian Seamen's Church.
Following her retirement from nursing, she volunteered for the Family Services Agency of Marin Senior Connection program and the American Cancer Society Thrift Shop in Mill Valley. She was also an active member of the Outdoor Art Club in Mill Valley and participated in many of the Club's volunteer efforts.
Haldis is survived by her son and daughter in law, John Erik and Junena Lyckfors; her daughter and son in law, Marlia and John Berg; her grandchildren, Nicole and Nathan Lyckfors; a brother, Odd E. Hanssen; many cousins and other relatives in the United States and Norway; and her cat Ebony.
Haldis's family wishes to extend special thanks to Junena, Elizabeth, Hans, and Joan for their extraordinary caregiving and support. Haldis requested no Memorial Service. A private gathering in her honor is planned.
Donations may be made to: Family Service Agency of Marin 555 Northgate Drive San Rafael, CA 94903.
