ROBERT G. ANDERSON
Former MMWD chairman
Robert George Anderson of San Rafael, former chairman of the Marin Municipal Water District board, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 16, 1991, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He was 82.
A native of Sausalito, he graduated from Tamalpais High School. He was 17 when he became a seaman and worked on a cargo freighter that traveled around the world.
In 1933 he married Claudine MacKinnon of Mill Valley and the couple settled in Sausalito.
That same year he started his own business in Sausalito, the Marin Sonoma Fast Freight Co. He served as president of the company until it was sold in 1945. After the sale, the company was renamed Merchantís Express; Mr. Anderson stayed on as vice president of sales.
Mr. Anderson was elected to the Marin Municipal Water District board in 1948; he was re-elected for five additional four-year terms. He stepped down in 1972.
Mr. Anderson retired from business in 1973. In 1986, he and his wife moved to Villa Marin retirement community in Terra Linda.
Mr. Anderson was a 52-year member of San Rafael Elks Club; he also belonged to Sons in Retirement in Marin. He served as trustee of the Sausalito School District.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Claudine Anderson of San Rafael; one son, Robert Anderson of Sausalito; one daughter, Patricia Persson of Tiburon; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His daughter, Barbara Hamon, died in 1984.
