Mill Valley resident
A private family service will be held for longtime educator Berkeley Mathews of Mill Valley.
Mr. Mathews, who served as the Union School District superintendent in Santa Clara County for 22 years, died March 23 at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco. He was 82.
He was born in San Francisco and was a longtime resident of Los Gatos before settling in Mill Valley nine years ago. He attended the University of S.F, the University of Oregon and San Jose State University. During World War II, he served as a sergeant with the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division of Ski Troops.
Mr. Mathews graduated with a bachelorís degree in education from San Jose State in 1950 and went on to receive his masterís degree in education from Stanford University. He began his career as a teacher and through the years held the positions of vice principal, principal and district superintendent of the Union School District in Santa Clara County.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Los Gatos, the Kiwanis Club of Los Gatos, the American Cancer Society, the Belvedere-Tiburon Rotary Club and the California Ski Troop Alumni.
Mr. Mathews is survived by his wife, Joan Mathews of Mill Valley; two daughters, Priscilla Kjar of San Diego and Elizabeth Mathews-Stuhlbarg of Larkspur; three sons, Daniel Mathews of Los Gatos, John Mathews of Menlo Park and Thomas Mathews of San Francisco; and four grandchildren.
