Daniel Gale, former Belvedere official, dies at 72

A memorial service is scheduled March 27 for Daniel Gale, a past chairman of the Belvedere Planning Commission honored as the city's 2004 Citizen of the Year.

Mr. Gale, a 37-year resident of Belvedere, died March 4. He was 72.

A well-traveled architect whose consulting firm provided planning, oversight and management for commercial and residential projects, Mr. Gale began his commission tenure in 1986. After serving on the commission for almost 17 years, including 14 years as chairman, he retired in 2002.

"Dan was larger than life," said Diane Henderson, who served Belvedere as planning director during a decade of Gale's tenure as commission chairman. "He was so bright, a fabulous architect and a tremendous problem-solver, and he always had a twinkle in his eye."

Henderson said he "was passionate about his work and preserving Belvedere as the special place that it is."

Born in St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Gale received a bachelor's degree in architecture, with honors, from Washington University in St. Louis in 1957. After spending nearly 20 years in various roles and locations for the architectural firm, Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, he opened the firm's San Francisco office in 1969 and moved the family to Belvedere.

Though residential architecture was his primary interest, Mr. Gale had a hand in designing airports, hotels, office buildings and retail complexes worldwide.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, Mr. Gale is survived by a sister, Caroline Fischman of St. Louis; two daughters, Caroline Gale of Portland, Ore., and Rebecca Gale of La Canada; a son, Daniel Gale, of Arcata; and six grandchildren.

The memorial service will be at 4 p.m. at St. Stephen's Church in Belvedere. A reception will follow at the San Francisco Yacht Club.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 25 Bellam Blvd., Suite 150 in San Rafael.
