Funeral for former Petaluma Mayor Everett A. Matzen, a Butcher’s Union official, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Parent Funeral Chapel, Petaluma
Matzen, 60, died Friday in a San Francisco hospital. He had been hospitalized since becoming ill at work Tuesday.
A life-long resident of Petaluma, Matzen was first elected to the City Council in 1957. He was elected mayor in 1961 and served until resigning in 1963. Norman Van Bebber was appointed to full the remainder of his term.
Matzen also had served on the Petaluma Planning Commission, the Sonoma County Grand Jury and the Citizens Advisory Committee of Santa Rosa Junior College.
Matzen began his working life as a delivery boy for a local food market and worked his way up to clerk, Journeyman meat cutter and meat market manager.
He had worked as secretary-treasurer of the butcher’s Union Local 115 of San Francisco, and had held many union positions during his career.
Matzen served in the Coast Guard during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Matzen and a daughter, Linda Baldwin, both of Petaluma; his mother, Marie Matzen of Petaluma; a sister, Mildred Ruzsicska; and three grandchildren.Private burial will be at Cypress Hill Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the George Mesure Scholarship Fund, Butcher’s Union Local 115, 3016 16th Street, San Francisco, or to a favorite charity.
