Heart Attack Kills Oakland Coon Hunter
A 64-year-old Oakland man dropped dead from a heart attack early yesterday while coon hunting with a companion just north of San Rafael.
Dead is Whalen Battle of 1452 Fifth street, Oakland, who sat down to rest in a clump of bushes on the Miller Ranch just north of San Rafael about 2:454 a.m. yesterday.
A companion, Devier Parrott, also of Oakland, said that he heard Battle gasp for air. Parrot (sic) hurried to the Miller ranch about half a mile away and called for help. When United Ambulance arrived, the victim was dead.
Parrott told deputies he and Battle had bagged two coons, hung them up on a tree and had just sat down to rest when Battle was stricken.
Coroner Frank Keaton said that Battle is believed to have two daughters and two sisters in Oakland, who are being contacted for funeral arrangements. Battle was a machinist.
The body will be sent to Hudson Funeral Home, Oakland.
