Hazel Johnston Ainsworth, mother of Kentfield School District trustee Winifred A. Setrakian, died Tuesday at an Oakland retirement home after a brief illness. She was 89.
Mrs. Ainsworth was born in Santa Clara. She graduated from Stanford University in 1910, obtained a teaching credential from San Jose State Normal College and taught until 1912, when she married Howard D. Ainsworth, a mining engineer.
The couple traveled throughout the west, settling in Berkeley in 1918, where Ainsworth established a manufacturing company. They lived there until Ainsworth’s death in 1961. Mrs. Ainsworth moved to Walnut Creek in 1965 and to Oakland in 1973.
Mrs. Ainsworth was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Stanford Women’s Club, and numerous other women’s, educational and philanthropic organizations.
In addition to Mrs. Setrakian of Kentfield, Mrs. Ainsworth is survived by a daughter, Ila Lee Ehret of Bangkok, Thailand; two sons, Laine Ainsworth of Oakland and John Ainsworth of Hollister, San Benito County; a sister, Dorothy J. Kyle of Laguna Hills, Orange County; 13 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland are pending the arrival of Mrs. Ehret from Thailand.
