Melville Creswell, retired San Francisco dealer, died today at a Novato hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 83.
He and the late Edward Thomas were founders of the Creswell and Thomas Furniture Co. in 1932, last occupying what is now the Western Furniture Co. building, which they built at 1848 Fourth Street.
Before opening his own business in San Rafael, Creswell was for about 25 years manager of the John Breuner Co. furniture store in San Francisco.
He was born in San Francisco, where he grew up and was educated. He and his wife, Gertrude M. Creswell, moved to San Rafael in 1908, living here until a few years ago, when they moved to Novato to make their home with their daughter, Jean Westlund, at 1028 Third Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Creswell are well known in Marin County music circles and for 16 years, until 1939, he directed the choir of First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael.
Creswell was a member of Marin Lodge 191, Free and Accepted Masons, and a former member of the Bohemian Club.
He is survived by his wife; his daughter; a sister, Elsie Donnley of San Francisco, and two granddaughters.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Keatonís Mortuary, San Rafael.
