Shipbuilder Arques dies
Sausalito boat builder and real estate magnate Donlan J. Arques is dead at 84.
Mr. Arques died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1993, at his home in Novato.
A veteran shipbuilder who learned the trade from his father, he owned 25 acres at Marinship on the Sausalito waterfront.
Mr. Arques was involved in a number of waterfront enterprises, including boat building and repair and commercial fishing.
Mr. Arques was at the center of controversy for years as the county sought to clean up the waterfront community. Marin County sued him for permitting “nautical alums” at the Waldo Point houseboat community, and he ultimately evicted tenants who did not have vessel occupancy permits.
In 1973, he sold much of his waterfront acreage, and in the early 1980s he renovated the marina area at Gate Six.
He was a Marin resident for 70 years. His wife, Verna Arques, died in 1989. A brother, James, died earlier.
He was a collector of nautical artifacts and had a vast knowledge of noted sailors, skippers and marine lore.
A funeral is set for 11 a.m. Monday at Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel in Mill Valley.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral chapel.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in St. Helena.
