Age 44, of Novato passed into the arms of God on Thursday, May 16, 2002, after a six-month battle with melanoma. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends. Phil was born July 30, 1957, to Irving and Mary Swig in Honolulu, Hawaii, when it was still a territory. When he was 17, he moved to Marin County, and graduated from Redwood High School in 1975. He attended the College of Marin and the University of San Francisco where he studied business and organizational management. Phil was a commercial real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in Greenbrae. He was an enthusiastic volunteer in his children's activities, coaching softball and Pop Warner and chaperoning field trips to Walker Creek as well as hikes and overnight trips for Boy Scouts Troop 42 in Novato. In his spare time Phil was an avid fan of the Grateful Dead and enjoyed listening to music and swimming on the Mudsharks swim team at Rolling Hills Club in Novato. Phil was married to Maureen Cole Swig from Petaluma for 14 years. He was the beloved father of Andrew and Kristen Swig. Phil is survived by his mother Mary Swig of Honolulu, Hawaii; his sisters Nancy Swig Silberman and her husband Arthur Silberman of San Rafael, Sue Blackburn and her husband Sam Blackburn of Corning, California, and Barbara Swig of Honolulu, Hawaii; his brother-in-law Pete Cole; his mentor and dear friend MaryEllen Newman of Santa Rosa; and his many wonderful friends and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Phil left us far too early, but in his short time on earth he made many friends and lived life with love, gusto and passion. According to his family and friends, Phil Swig could make you roll with laughter and send happy tears down your cheeks. A Memorial Service is planned for Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Novato. Friends and family members are encouraged to share their memories and say a few words in celebration of Phil's life. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of their choice or to the Phil Swig Memorial Fund, c/o Julie Casey, 5 Los Cedros Drive, Novato, CA 94947.
