Marin Couple To Inherit $1/4 Million
A San Rafael couple inherit a quarter of an estate estimated to be near one million dollars, under the terms of the will of Alice Griffith, San Francisco welfare worker and philanthropist.
The terms of the will were made known yesterday.
One-fourth share of the huge estate was left in trust to William and Catherine Grant of 34 Ridge avenue, San Rafael. Grant was a godson of Miss Griffith. She reared and educated him after he lost his parents as a child.
Miss Griffith died Feb. 22 at the age of 94 in her San Francisco home. She was the daughter of Millen Griffith, who arrived in San Francisco in 1849, started a tugboat business and amassed a fortune.
Miss Griffith helped found the Telegraph Hill Neighborhood House, San Francisco’s first settlement house, in 1902. She also helped set up the first San Francisco Housing Assn. after the earthquake and fire of 1906, and to establish Bothin Convalescent Home, Garden Hospital and San Francisco’s first tuberculosis examination center.
One-half of her estate is to be divided among three nieces; an eighth among three nephews, and the remaining eighth between the San Francisco Foundation and Trinity Episcopal Church.
