That's an interesting question. But, it is pretty general and you would probably get many different answers depending on who you asked today.

I have found one of the best ways to understand what it was like in a certain time period is to read through the newspapers of the era. From those you can determine people's attitudes, how they reacted to various events, the technological products they were using (from advertisements, etc.), the type of humor and entertainment they may have enjoyed, and, also, reflections of the dark side of life such as crime.

If you don't live in the San Francisco Bay Area, some libraries belong to interlibrary loan programs that will allow you to borrow newspapers on microfilm.
