Cemeteries (San Francisco County)
There were once quite a number of cemeteries inside San Francisco's city limits. Since the entire San Francisco City and County consists of only forty-nine square miles, land began to become more and more scarce as the population grew in the early 1900s. About that time, work began to move most of these cemeteries to locations south along the peninsula, primarily to Colma (San Mateo County). By about 1940, the interments of all but three cemeteries (Mission Dolores, Old Sailor & Seaman's Cemetery, and Presidio) and one crematorium (Columbarium) had been moved outside of San Francisco.
