Montgomery Street Cemetery

Dates of Existence: 1849 to unknown.
Location: Montgomery street looking north from California street.
Number interred: unknown.
Moved to: probably Yerba Buena Cemetery.

MORE HOLY THAN RIGHTEOUS.—When will the Street Commissioner wake up, and look at that unrighteous hole on the corner of Montgomery and California streets. We should think the remarks of Aldermen Atwill, Meiggs and others in open council, would be sufficient to cause him to stir round a little. The hole is really dangerous, and needs attending to. At present a plank is placed over it, in such a way as to cover a portion of it most admirably, we confess, but how many unfortunate individuals have had to limp home after nearly or quite breaking their legs by stepping into the opening that is left we have not the slightest idea. Several complaints have been made to us recently. …Before the hole is covered it might be well to rescue such dead bodies as may now be lying in the cistern below, and have them decently interred in Yerba Buena Cemetery.”
