Agnews Cemetery (historic)

Santa Clara, CA 95054
GoogleMap

Notes:

  • “In 1889, the Agnews Insane Asylum opened in Santa Clara on farmland purchased from Abraham Agnews and was the third institution in the state established for the mentally ill. In the 1906 earthquake, the main treatment building collapsed, crushing 112 residents and staff under a pile of rubble. The victims were buried in a mass grave in the asylum cemetery grounds. The Institution was then redesigned with low-rise buildings that resembled a college campus. According to the information from DDS there are 607 documented burials here from 1889-1906. We counted 386 markers. This means that there are 221 missing gravesites.” Sonoma County Genealogy Site

Also known as (AKA):

  • Holy Cross Cemetery

Notes:

  • “Holy Cross Cemetery, locally known as Kell Cemetery … 25.48-acre parcel … The first burial of record appears to have been on 25 May 1871, and the last on 4 February 1890 …” -The Kell Cemetery: An Historic Cemetery in San Jose {archaeological evaluation}
  • Calvary Cemetery replaced the old Holy Cross Cemetery, known to oldtimers as the Kell cemetery because the hill land at the end of Canoas Avenue was a gift of pioneer ranchers Thomas and Margaret Kell to St. Patrick's parish in 1870 … Most of those buried in the old Kell graveyard were moved to the new cemetery, but records were destroyed in a fire in the office of the San Francisco Archdiocese and some graves, including that of Louis Pellier, 'father of the valley's prune industry' were never found.” - The Silent Place Where Local History Is Written in Stone (by Patricia Loomis (San Jose News, August 2, 1982)

Also known as (AKA):

  • Ed Levine Cemetery

Notes:

  • ... Calvary {Cemetery} became home to several pioneers originally interred in the Laguna Cemetery, now long abandoned and incorporated into Ed Levin County Park east of Milpitas. Among these were members of the Frederick Brandt family who ranched what is now the park today.” — The Silent Place Where Local History Is Written in Stone (by Patricia Loomis (San Jose News, August 2, 1982)
  • “The first burials occurred in the early 1860's, with the last burial in 1914. Most of the 44 plots had been sold by 1867. The plot map includes the names of Josiah Evans, Mary and Jacob Miller, J. Weller, Felter and Pomeroy. By the 1950's only a few headstones remained. Because so many headstones are missing, the names and number of those buried in the cemetery is unclear.” — County of Santa Clara Parks, 2006.
  • “The Laguna Cemetery is also located on the Spring Valley Area. This pioneer cemetery was used from 1863 to 1912. Destroyed by vandals and neglected for years, it has recently been renovated. Stop by the cemetery gates and enjoy the fascinating memorial which provides a glimpse into the lives of the people buried there.” — County of Santa Clara Parks, March 2007.

The McCartysville (former name of Saratoga) residents formed a non-profit cemetery association named Madronia, after the red-trunked madrone trees on the site…” — Saratoga Chamber of Commerce

Notes:

  • “The deed for this grant was recorded on March 19 1861, and the name 'Mountain View Cemetery' came into general usage thereafter. This cemetery site was where the Mountain View Pioneer and Historical Society placed its first plaque on March 3 1957.” — History of the First Presbyterian Church of Mountain View, California, 1851-1991
  • “The land was donated to the city as a park in the early 1900s. For some reason, the graves were simply placed down, and covered with dirt. Bodies were not removed to another cemetery, Mountain View Cemetery, became Pioneer Memorial Park … an actual home to Mountain View's pioneers … The remains of the pioneers still are buried underneath the park.” — Now and Then
