“In 1885, workmen preparing the site for Holy Cross Church on High Street, dug up the old Mission Santa Cruz burial ground. They hauled six wagon loads of human remains and some grave markers to Holy Cross Cemetery in Live Oak. There, they re-buried the remains of missionaries, their Ohlone Indian converts, Spanish soldiers, Californio caballeros, European immigrants and Yankee loggers all together in an unmarked grave. …Holy Cross Cemetery, consecrated in 1873, continued to serve the local Catholic community until 1946…” — Old Holy Cross Cemetery suffers from vandalism, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Joel Isaacson, 28 December 2008.
